Author David Gilbert, President and CEO of Destination Cleveland
Menorah Park is proud to be among the places selected to share our story as part of the beautiful, vibrant, award-winning fabric of Cleveland and its suburbs.
More than a century ago, a small group of community members saw the need for 24-hour care for its frailest aging adults. We continue their legacy and share their passion in the award-winning health care and residential organization that is the expanded Menorah Park of today. Menorah Park’s nonprofit mission is to provide caring residential options and quality health care services in a culture of innovation and excellence, guided by Jewish values and a commitment to help all adults to age empowered, inspired and fulfilled. At Menorah Park, age is defined as personal, not chronological. We recognize that every individual’s path to successful aging is unique, and we offer many choices in services, programs and opportunities that help them continue their own positive stories.
After living at Menorah Park’s independent residence R.H. Myers for a short while, Jane is finding humor — and fame — by writing and singing about the realities of the often less-thanattractive aspects of the aging process. Jane says that aging is about attitude. Keeping the “funny bone” in shape is as important as keeping the back straight. Jane continues to enjoy having lunch with friends, swimming and taking advantage of occupational therapy, yoga and exercise classes. These lifestyle choices keep Jane going strong through many of life’s setbacks.
Married more than 50 years, Neal and Bonnie find comfort in having Menorah Park’s Mandel Adult Day Center to help Bonnie keep her zest for life and independence even as she experiences memory loss. Bonnie continues to enjoy dance, theater, movies and the arts during her regular visits to the center, where she is independent and empowered in a safe environment while Neal is at work. Memory loss can be scary and depressing, but the Center helps them continue their story of love and inspiration.
For many people, living pain-free is hard to imagine. Judi wanted to go to her grandson’s college graduation and was determined to do so without the aid of a wheelchair. After multiple knee surgeries and a leg surgery for a broken femur, she was still on the mend when she developed neck and back pain. Dry needling, one of the latest techniques for pain management offered by a certified specialist at Menorah Park’s Peter B. Lewis Aquatic & Therapy Center, made it possible for Judi to reach her goal. She sat comfortably for hours waiting for the moment, and then it came. She proudly watched him receive his diploma, and smiled with realization that she felt terrific and had no pain.
Elaine was concerned that the physical frailty that kept her from writing her name would impact her ability to make a difference. When she joined Menorah Park’s senior advocacy efforts, her signature on a letter about funding was a lipstick kiss that brought even more attention to the policy issue. Elaine often says her body may be limited, but she’s still a vibrant person and will not be defined by her challenges.
Ryan finds hope since his partial paralysis through the strong bond of caring found with his Menorah Park home care nurse. Over time, Ryan has miraculously regained slight sensations of touch, and sees that as a sign that he can – and will – walk again.
These are just a few of the dozens of inspiring stories that take place every day when people engage with Menorah Park, thanks in large part to the support of donors who share in the passion to make lives better. It is in these experiences and more that Menorah Park’s values, five-star services and award-winning programs offer something for everyone. Menorah Park is more than a top choice in Northeast Ohio — and in the nation — for health and wellness services and residential living. It’s a resource offering sound solutions to improve lives, no matter the circumstances or challenges, with a focus on each individual’s preferences, values, motivations and even fulfillment of dreams they thought would never come true. The Menorah Park of today will be different tomorrow, because it continues to evolve with new information, technologies and treatments, all in the service of helping individuals fulfill their goals and continue their personal stories of successful aging, however they define it.
