Looking aHead participants attend classes three days a week. Topics include interpersonal communication, interviewing skills, problem-solving and adjustment to disability. The groups are facilitated by an interdisciplinary team of allied health professionals in the fields of rehabilitation, nursing, nutrition and social work. Participants also engage in therapeutic projects, including horticultural therapy. During the spring and summer months, Looking aHead takes the lead in planning, planting and cultivating an interactive flower, herb and vegetable garden for residents to enjoy. When participants have demonstrated readiness for advanced training, they work one-on-one with Looking aHead's job coach to identify strengths and abilities, explore career options and develop vocational goals. The job coach then carves out a work trial on the Menorah Park campus similar to a job the participant might secure in the community. Examples of work trials have included roles as a resident transporter, cashier, greeter and mail carrier. This provides the participant with real-life work experience in preparation for transition into the community workplace. | |||||||||
