Once my family member moves into a nursing home, how long will it take for everyone to feel comfortable?
- The adjustment will take time -- for you and for your loved one. A successful adjustment can take anywhere from six months to a year. To make the transition easier, consider setting up your family member's room so it looks and feels as familiar as possible. Bring items from home that your family member recognizes and that will have meaning. Although bringing valuables is usually discouraged, you can use quilts, vases, pictures, furniture and other items that will create a home-like atmosphere and help your family member to accept their placement as a continuation of care in their "home."
- You must accept that your role as the primary caregiver changes once your loved one moves to a nursing home. It can be difficult to give up the control you once had, but becoming familiar with the procedures of the home and the staff will help you form a working partnership. Keep in mind that just because you relinquish a measure of control doesn't mean that you lose your rights. You should receive a copy of Residents' Rights upon admission. If you don’t, ask for them! Also, be sure to identify staff members who can address your questions and concerns. This will reduce your stress and uncertainty as well as expedite your requests.
- Don't forget to take care of yourself! Attend support group meetings with other family members of nursing home residents so you can release your feelings and share experiences. The emotional support you gain will help your loved one realize that you have adjusted well to their placement and are able to handle any issues that may arise. Speaking with other people in similar circumstances will help prepare you for the inevitable changes that can occur in your loved one's conditions and provide you with skills to appropriately deal with those changes.
- The right nursing home placement can be a positive experience for the resident and his or her family. Stay as involved in your loved one's daily life as you feel comfortable, but it is critical that you continue as many outside family activities as possible. Overall, remember that comfort and continued family involvement are the keys to a successful adjustment.
